Media for Health Announces Spanish Language Radio Drama Workshop

Birmingham, March 23, 2010: Media for Health is holding a workshop Friday and Saturday, March 26-27, 2010. It is the initial meeting of partner organizations and individuals coming together to produce the new Spanish Language Radio Drama (SLRD) that is being funded by the Communities Putting Prevention to Work grant, which is an initiative of the Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The SLRD workshop is bringing together leaders from Birmingham’s Hispanic community, UAB, and the Jefferson Co. Health Dept. with writers and producers specializing in Education-Entertainment locally and nationally. All day Friday and Saturday morning, there will be panels to identify health issues in our Hispanic community, discuss barriers and opportunities, and discuss the communication strategy of Education-Entertainment in this radio drama. Dr. Connie Kohler from UAB School of Public Health, Isabel Rubio from HICA!, and programs managers from PCI Media Impact are among a few of the presenters. PCI Media Impact is a New York organization that has helped create Education-Entertainment programs in the US and Latin America.

The SLRD will be a unique and entertaining radio drama that will use stories to inspire healthier living in Hispanic communities in Jefferson County and across the country. Based on the principles of entertainment-education, SLRD will be designed with dramatic storylines that weave in preventive health messages. SLRD is a partnership between Media for Health (MFH), Media Impact (MI), The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Hispanic Interest Coalition of Alabama (HICA), Jefferson County Health Department (JCHD), Cahaba Valley Health Care (CVHC), and other community organizations in Jefferson County.
