Keeping Up with the Walkers
Developed and produced for BioTechnical Communications, Keeping Up with the Walkers is a fun, engaging, and compelling 3 minute drama series that details the lives of an ordinary African-American family. The beginning scenario is both interesting and tragic, leaving one to wonder how ordinary the Walkers might just be. The Walkers have to find a way to keep their son from getting kicked off the baseball team by helping him shed a few pounds. Arlene, the quick-witted, no-nonsense grandmother, introduces the audience to more health challenges, when her sister falls into a diabetic coma. Tragedy and drama keep listeners tuning in to keep up with the Walkers and hear about their latest struggles and triumphs with life’s everyday challenges.

Media for Health, PCI Media Impact, and a tremendous coalition of local and national partners is producing a new radio drama using the principals of entertainment-education. This radio novella will be written and performed in Spanish and address obesity, tobacco use and other chronic health concerns in the Latino community. Forty-eight, 5-minute episodes are planned with an anticipated broadcast date of fall 2010. Support for this production is through the Jefferson County Department of Health, UAB, the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham, the Hugh Kaul Foundation, and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act’s Communities Putting Prevention to Work initiative.

Healing Circle
Healing Circle is a unique and entertaining radio drama that uses stories to inspire healthier living in American Indian communities across the country. Healing Circle is a partnership between Native American Public Telecommunications (NAPT), Native Voices One, Native Voices at the Autry, the National Society for American Indian Elderly (NSAIE), Media for Health, the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Public Health, and the Corporation for National and Community Service. Healing Circle is being developed for distribution on American Indian radio stations across the country and its development is being guided by a national Steering Committee.
The Healing Circle partners are proud to invite you to the Healing Circle Community Radio Workshop to be held in Albuquerque, New Mexico from Oct. 10-13, 2009. We are currently accepting applications. Space is limited, so be sure to apply before Sept. 18, 2009.
